Demolition of The Aveling and Porter Building, and Dickens’ Doctor’s building, in Strood.

The Deaf Cat held an exhibition in our new Gallery at no. 83, opposite Rochester Cathedral, relating to the history, beauty and destruction of these buildings.

Everything you can see of the building here has now gone. The painting you can see being worked on by Peter Reeds is part of  quadriptych which featured in the exhibition.

The exhibition featured many artists’ work, and was up for at least four weeks, including the Sweeps festival.

  1. See some of the paintings in Peter Reeds’ Folio.

“I think this one is going to have to go. Personally, I don't consider it to be a great loss: it doesn't do anything for me, as someone not stuck in the past here, and it certainly has no particular architectural qualities. I know: I didn't just go past it, as most folk do, but spent a fair amount of time in that place. I wasn't impressed, apart from the stained glass window half-way up the stairs — and that could be preserved as an item by itself anyway”
